Communications Manager (Part-Time)

Salary: £12,000-15,000 per annum

Probation period: 3 months

Location: Northwest London, TfL Zone 2

Hours: Part-time, 22.5 hours spread over each week

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years’ experience in a relevant field

The Role

Campaign Against Antisemitism is a national charity dedicated to exposing and countering antisemitism through education and zero-tolerance enforcement of the law. We are looking to recruit an exceptional Communications Manager who will be responsible for supporting our charity’s work to raise awareness of antisemitism, primarily by writing persuasive, well-argued copy for our website and statements to the media.

The position is part-time, 22.5 hours a week, based in our newly-refurbished office in northwest London (TfL Zone 2), on a salary of £12,500-£15,000/annum. You will have a bachelor’s degree and at least two years’ experience in a relevant field, such as public relations or journalism, during which you created compelling copy and campaigns.

Working closely with our professional staff, volunteer directors and our various specialised units, your role will be to ensure that CAA clearly and effectively communicates its message.

The majority of your work will consist of writing and editing articles about our work and antisemitic incidents for the CAA website. You will need to quickly grasp the technicalities of the cases we work on, produce precise, well-argued and well-presented communication strategies and persuade the public to support our cause.

You will continue to build, evolve and maintain the CAA brand across social media networks. You will be a media contact for CAA, supporting volunteers from our Media Liaison Unit in arranging interviews. You will need to help the team to build and strengthen relationships with the media to raise awareness of antisemitism in the UK.

You will be in close contact with our volunteers around the UK, many of whom hold leading roles in the spheres of law and business. You will be responsible for supporting and developing our Content Unit as well as building our Creative Unit, according to agreed targets, including providing input to volunteers producing graphics and videos.

An average week might break down as follows:
55% writing website articles and press releases
20% meeting journalists and fielding media requests
15% preparing long-term research/writing assignments
5% liaising with volunteers
5% managing social media

Your work will require the ability to prioritise effectively, respond fast, think analytically and write and communicate persuasively and eloquently. You will have the ability to learn fast, rapidly develop practical solutions and operate with total discretion. You will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a large and growing team.

This is a rewarding opportunity for a self-motivated person with a passion for communications and the capacity to learn fast from an experienced and successful team.

As Communications Manager you will:

  • Report to the Chairman directly but will regularly work with other members of the Management Board and professional staff;
  • Balance long-term projects with the need to reactively respond to media events in a very short space of time;
  • Think analytically and strategically, producing work that is meticulous, precise and considered, very often under pressure;
  • Write eloquently, producing work which is consistent and extremely well presented;
  • Manage, develop and post updates to CAA’s social media profiles, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, devising and running various social media campaigns concurrently;
  • Oversee general content production/editing;
  • Use online tools to work collaboratively with a large group of volunteers who are geographically dispersed around the UK and are often only available in the evenings or at weekends; and
  • Operate in a structured, strategic manner, clearly communicating with our volunteer team and responding quickly and precisely to media requests.

Your work will focus on:

  • Preparing materials for publication about antisemitic incidents in the UK;
  • Writing articles and producing documents, videos, research and briefings;
  • Liaising, building and strengthening relationships with journalists and the media;
  • Assisting journalists and the media with research and responding quickly to incoming media queries and requests;
  • Assisting with the production of fundraising and marketing materials;
  • Developing and enforcing CAA’s existing house style guide;
  • Helping to recruit and train new volunteers for communications roles to fill specific gaps in our structure; and
  • Working with our Chairman, Management Board and professional team to ensure that new projects run smoothly once established.

You will be someone who is:

  • Discreet;
  • Precise;
  • Articulate;
  • Persuasive;
  • Personable;
  • Self-motivated;
  • Politically savvy;
  • Innovative:
  • Computer-literate;
  • Familiar with the traditional and new media landscape in the UK; and
  • Expert in existing and emerging social media trends, technologies and best practice.

About Us

Since Campaign Against Antisemitism was formed in the summer of 2014, we have recruited an outstanding team of volunteers whose work has seen us grow into a well-organised, high-profile campaign.

We expect the authorities, professions and political parties to take firm action against antisemites and we work closely with them, but when they do not defend the rights of British Jews, we take action ourselves in court, in tribunals and through the media.

We are proud to have empowered individuals to contribute their considerable talents to the fight against antisemitism, and thanks to your support we will continue to do so.

Our goal is to tackle antisemitism through education and enforcement, with the agility of a start-up, the expertise of established professionals in various fields and, and where needed, a dash of chutzpah.

We have reached the point where we need a part-time Communications Manager to join our staff team.
